Project Overview
I solicited and was awarded a small grant from the National Science Writers Association for The Objective to run a series centered around objectivity in science journalism.
Our Approach
I have always had a pet interest for how objectivity is negotiated in science journalism. In the wake of the pandemic, this was also the interest of a number of other institutions, and it felt like the perfect fit to work with the National Association of Science Writers to deliver a few stories specifically about how science journalism's normative processes sometimes stand in the way of more nuanced, equitable storytelling.
Key Features
Stories critical of mainstream science coverage that would not have been covered anywhere else
All selected pitches were by women, most by POC.
We worked with early-career or brand-new writers on enterprise stories
