Project Overview

A journalism non-profit fiscally sponsored by the Institute of Nonprofit News dedicated to media criticism and how objectivity reinforces existing power structures, both inside and outside of the newsroom.

Our Approach

I remember being told by an editor that I had to include climate denialists in my story about climate change. "In order to be fair." It didn't matter that my story did not touch on climate denialism at all - but rather, the editor was wary of being labeled "liberal" by potential future readers. When Gabe Schneider asked if I would start a newsletter with him about this very topic in 2020, I eagerly agreed. I brought on Holly Rosewood and he brought on James Salanga and Curtis Yee. With others, we managed to start a Substack that eventually grew into its own journalism site with a robust freelance roster and enough of a budget to host full-time
